Biome Stones

A Biome Stone is a rare, consumable item that changes the biome of the 16×16 chunk you're standing in to one specific biome (Desert, Jungle, Snowy Plains, and so on), out of all 55 overworld biomes. There's no crafting recipe for them — they're a mob-kill drop only, and most of the 55 are locked behind a progression chain rather than available from day one.

This only relabels the biome — it doesn't change the terrain or place any new blocks. What it does affect is which mobs can spawn there and the foliage/water color, so it's still a real tool for shaping your island — making a chunk snow-free by setting it to Desert, for example, without touching a single block.

Getting one

Biome Stones only drop from a mob you personally kill — fall damage, drowning, or another mob finishing it off doesn't count. The chance is deliberately low since these gate real progression:

Looting level Drop chance
None 1%
Looting I 1.5%
Looting II 2%
Looting III 2.5%

Which mob drops which stone?

Each mob can only ever drop the specific Biome Stone(s) it's tied to — see the tables below. Killing the same mob repeatedly is the only way to farm a given biome.

Using a Biome Stone

Hold right-click to consume one. It sets the biome of the chunk you're standing in and shows a green confirmation message.

Island only

Biome Stones only work in the overworld (your island). Using one in the Mining dimension just wastes it with no effect — that dimension is a fixed stone cave with a permanent ceiling, where biome barely matters. The item is consumed either way, so double-check where you are before eating one.

Starting biomes

The mobs that already spawn on your island at night (Meadow biome) are your tier-1 sources — no biome-changing required first, available from the moment you spawn:

Mob Biome Stone
Bat Badlands
Creeper Bamboo Jungle
Donkey Beach
Enderman Birch Forest
Glow Squid Cherry Grove
Rabbit Cold Ocean
Sheep Dark Forest
Skeleton Deep Cold Ocean
Slime Deep Dark
Spider Deep Frozen Ocean
Witch Deep Lukewarm Ocean
Zombie Deep Ocean
Zombie Villager Desert

Going further

Every other biome (42 more, covering all 55 total) is unlocked the same way, but gated behind a mob that only spawns in a biome you've already changed a chunk to — for example, changing a chunk to Desert lets you find and kill a Husk there, which can drop a Dripstone Caves Biome Stone. That Dripstone Caves mob then unlocks something else in turn, and so on.

Solid arrows below are the mob's only possible drop. Dashed arrows mean the mob has two possible outcomes on a 50/50 roll (still the same drop chance overall — it just picks one of the two at random when it does drop).

Dead ends are normal

A few biomes (Deep Dark, Pale Garden, Snowy Beach, Stony Peaks, Stony Shore) have no mobs of their own that drop a new Biome Stone — they're valid destinations but don't chain further. That's expected: not every biome needs to unlock something else, only the path to reach all 55 needs to exist.
